Pielavesi Church

Pielavesi Church was completed in 1878. It was designed by provincial architect Carl Ferdinand Öhmann. The church is a long church with transepts. It has seating for approximately 1,500 people.

The altarpiece is a stained‑glass work by Urpo Vainio from 1956, titled “Christ is Risen.” In the chancel there is also the old church’s altarpiece “The Holy Communion,” painted by Mikael Toppelius.

The church was thoroughly renovated in 1990 according to plans by the architectural office Aulis Jääskeläinen Ky from Seinäjoki. The electric heating system was renewed. A new back wall was built in the nave, creating an entrance hall called the “forecourt” under the organ gallery, as well as a children’s room and a bridal room. The chancel and all altar furnishings were renewed, and the church was repainted.

Immediately next to the church is a large cemetery. The war graves are overseen by a statue titled “The Sentry,” created in 1958 by sculptor Heikki Konttinen.
