Kerkonkoski – A Rural Village in the Middle of Nowhere

Kerkonkoski is a small rural village of five hundred inhabitants, located “in the middle of nowhere.” For decades it has been one of the favourite destinations of people travelling on the waterways. In Kerkonkoski you can experience the rapids of the Kerkonjoki River running through the village centre, and the locking system of the canal that connects Lake Kiesimäjärvi and Lake Niinivesi. From the village, it is possible to travel by water as far as Lahti to the south, while routes to the north lead toward Pielavesi. The Kerkonkoski Canal was completed in 1927 and once served as an important timber transport route in the region.

Today, the harbour offers convenient services for boaters and caravanners. There is a refuelling station, toilet and shower facilities, and a swimming beach. A short walk away, at the terrace of the summer restaurant Kerkonkosken Keidas, you can enjoy delicious pizza and a cold drink. Ice cream and other groceries can be picked up from the village shop.

Cyclists will enjoy the scenic rural gravel roads, and road cyclists are drawn to the 107‑kilometre Koskien kierros (Tour of the Rapids), which passes several rapids. There are also numerous interesting accommodation options in and around the village.

Kerkonkoski is especially known for its events and active community. At midsummer, people gather in great numbers from near and far. At the end of summer, the village celebrates the Kerkonkoski Venetian Festival. Between these festivities, various other activities take place throughout the year, including winter events.
