Toussunlinna Rock Paintings

The Toussunlinna rock painting in Hankavesi, Rautalampi, was discovered in 2014. Today, Toussunlinna is part of the Southern Konnevesi National Park.

The rock painting is located by the water, about eight kilometres south of the village centre. It is best viewed in summer by boat or by paddling, and in winter by skiing.

The painting is situated high on an unusually smooth rock wall. Its exact age has not been determined, but it is several thousand years old and very unique in the region.

A human figure painted with red ochre, about half a metre tall — known as Toussun‑ukko — is clearly visible. To the right of the approximately 40‑centimetre‑tall figure, other shapes can be distinguished, which are believed to represent elk. The elk, an important game animal of its time, appears frequently in Finnish rock art.
