Äyskoski – a Traditional Large Trout Rapid with a Cult Reputation

Äyskoski is a 1200-meter-long rapid that flows between Nilakka and Rasvanki in Tervo. The average flow of the rapid is approximately 21 m³/s. The rapids area contains both fast-moving rapids and calmer areas, providing a suitable area for fly fishing all year round.

Äyskoski is home to native trout, grayling and whitefish, as well as mainly stocked trout. The area operates mainly on a catch & release basis, meaning that trout and grayling must be released. However, other fish species may be caught. All fishing is done with barbless hooks.

Overall, Äyskoski offers good streamer and nymph fishing water in the areas of the fast main stream, summertime pupa and surface fly fishing spots, and ideal backwaters for surface fly fishing during the cold water seasons. The best times for fishing are the spring mistfly season, the early summer streamer season and the summer waterfly hatching, not to mention the late autumn grayling season.

Äyskoski is widely known as a classic trout rapids – experienced fly fishermen appreciate it as a wide and diverse rapids with large trout and grayling. Most of the fish are already from natural spawning and work to strengthen the natural populations will continue.
