Master Fishers in Action! Come Photograph or Spot the Spectacular Osprey Dives

Are you a photography enthusiast, a professional nature photographer, or a nature lover looking for new experiences? Tervo’s Sääksikeidas offers a unique opportunity to observe and photograph ospreys hunting at close range.

Osprey Hunting Up Close

At Sääksikeidas, you can watch these skilled hunters dive for fish, especially from hides where the action can take place as close as 5–10 meters away. A natural pond has been created for the ospreys, where they find daily nourishment for themselves and their chicks. Most often, they catch rainbow trout, but the pond also contains natural prey such as roach, perch, pike, and other fish species.

Excellent Photography Conditions

Sääksikeidas is designed to provide ideal lighting conditions from early morning to late evening. There are four hides available, two of which feature photography windows at water level for unique perspectives. Each hide accommodates three seats with traditional photography openings.

What to Expect?

The ospreys’ fishing activity varies with nature’s rhythm. On the best days, you might witness 15–20 dives in a single day, especially during early morning and evening hours. During quieter periods, you can spot other birds and wildlife.

  • Peak season: Early April to mid-May, and August to early September

  • June is usually calmer, but osprey visits gradually increase from early July.

  • By the end of September, ospreys leave for their wintering grounds in Africa.

Other Wonders of Nature at the Sääksikeidas

In addition to ospreys, the haven hosts many other fascinating species:

  • Waterfowl and waders are abundant.

  • Grey herons arrive from August onwards.

  • Otters and foxes may roam the area during the dusky evenings of autumn.

  • White-tailed eagles are frequent visitors, and photographing them is particularly rewarding in autumn.

Experiences Year-Round

While the osprey season ends in September, the Sääksikeidas remains an exciting destination for wildlife photography and nature experiences well into late autumn. Autumn and early winter, up until Christmas, offer excellent opportunities for photographing white-tailed eagles.
